Our Story

Our story

We are sisters. We are great friends. We are also a survivor and a cheerleader.

Katie was diagnosed with breast cancer in the spring of 2011, but despite having excellent medical care and a wonderful network of friends and family, the experience was still completely overwhelming. Every step of the way, we kept asking ourselves: what can we do to make this journey different for future breast cancer patients and the people who care about them? The Licorice Project® is our answer.

Why Licorice?

While participating in our first breast cancer walk, we were touched by those who came out to cheer us on and give us treats—like licorice. That inspired us to begin our own family tradition of handing out licorice to walkers in Chicago as they passed through our neighborhood. This simple gesture made people feel happy and upbeat and brought a smile to their faces.

Our hope is that The Licorice Project®, now a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, will improve the lives of everyone affected by breast cancer by connecting, sharing, and helping each other, and by spreading unexpected joy along the way.
